Clinically, however, the question is never simply “Is he shutting down?”
The real diagnostic question is: What does that shutdown mean?
Narcissistic and borderline organizations can look nearly identical on the surface. Both may involve withdrawal, disengagement, loss of vitality, and indirect expressions of anger. But diagnosis does not live at the level of behavior. It lives in the subjective meaning, the emotional logic of the shutdown, and what the behavior is defending against.
This episode explains why focusing only on observable behavior leads to frequent misdiagnosis — and why understanding inner experience is essential.
