Read what our viewers are saying

Listening to your podcasts has helped me to understand some problems within ME and my own personality. For example, I was listening to your recent episode on anger, hatred, and rage when I realized that I myself am plagued with symptoms of hate and rage. For some reason I'm able to take your approach and be open- minded about applying the concepts to my own behaviors that match your descriptions as well as applying them to what I see in my husband's.

You're being so helpful to me; thank you! I took your questions and went back through my journal & wrote out the answers to your questions pertaining to specific conflicts, and that is helping me ….

Dr. Mazzella, you are a rare gem of a psychotherapist. You are one of very few authentic professionals on YouTube who isn't afraid to tell it like it is ...

Your balanced perspectives are exactly what people need to hear, so they can open their minds and challenge their thoughts, strong beliefs, perspectives, and actions.

Your content is so valuable to me and others. I've shared your YT channel to 2 friends so far that I think would benefit. …Honestly, I think everyone could benefit from your extensive knowledge on these issues!

✅Takeaways
👉White depression is characterized by a deep sense of inner void, emptiness, and a lack of vitality in life.
👉Therapeutic work involves recognizing deep identification with a dead caregiver and helping the individual become more affectively involved and alive.
👉The process of detachment and mourning is initiated by a feeling of guilt, which is not persecutory in nature but rather healthy and propels one to move forward in life

✅Sound Bites
👉"A deep sense of an inner void, emptiness, a lack of vitality, and a sense of futility in life."
👉"The essence of the therapeutic work involves recognizing this identification and helping this type of individual become more affectively involved and alive."
👉"This is more of a healthy guilt that propels one to move forward in life."

Therapeutic Techniques for Overcoming A Specific Type of Depression 3

The Narcissism Decoder July 13, 2024 6:00 am

In this video, we will explore how the lack of emotional resonance and affective attunement from caregivers can profoundly impact an individual's sense of meaning and worth. This absence often results in a lack of conviction or investment in work and relationships, making life seem difficult and devoid of meaning. The video illustrates this through examples how meaningful relations are internalized and form a core part of our self-worth. Therapeutically, the focus is on addressing the underlying sense of futility and helping individuals understand and overcome the belief that their efforts are meaningless.

From a Lack of Motivation to Understanding the Emotional Void

The Narcissism Decoder July 6, 2024 6:00 am

In this video, we explore the experience of an individual who feels a pervasive sense of meaninglessness and finds it difficult to derive pleasure or remain emotionally connected in life. This condition, known as "white depression," is linked to an unconscious identification with a depressed or narcissistically preoccupied caregiver. Such caregivers, while physically present, lack emotional resonance and attunement, leading to the internalization of their emotional detachment. This internalized "deadness" results in a profound inner void and emotional numbness, causing individuals to drift through life without real conviction. Despite outward appearances of normalcy, these individuals often struggle with maintaining emotional investment in relationships, work, and life itself.

Unmasking Depression: The Hidden Impact of Narcissistic Caregivers

The Narcissism Decoder June 29, 2024 7:00 am

In this video, we explore how excessive agreeableness, or "people pleasing," can obstruct genuine communication and connection. While it may seem like a positive trait, constant cooperation often masks true engagement, leading to frustration and irritation. This behavior is commonly seen in individuals with narcissistic tendencies who struggle to acknowledge differences. Understanding this dynamic can help address these frustrations and foster more authentic communication.

The Hidden Obstruction: How Excessive Agreeableness Hinders Genuine Connection

The Narcissism Decoder June 15, 2024 6:00 am

In this video, we explore how many individuals feel profoundly alone and emotionally deprived because they fail to recognize and connect with their loved one's unique communication style. We look at an example where a woman labels her partner as selfish instead of expressing her deeper feelings of hurt, while her partner, struggling with narcissistic tendencies, reacts defensively. This misunderstanding prevents meaningful communication, leaving both partners feeling isolated and stuck in a cycle of emotional deprivation. We discuss how, in my work with such individuals and couples, I help them slow down and truly listen to each other's impulsive and deteriorated forms of communication. By fostering attention and frustration tolerance, I guide them toward fulfilling and memorable interactions that are suitable for storage—remembering and internalizing positive experiences. This process helps break the cycle of emotional deprivation and requires maintaining curiosity about one's own and a loved one's inner reality, leading to more meaningful connections and relationships.

Alone While Together: Understanding Emotional Isolation in Relationships

The Narcissism Decoder June 7, 2024 6:00 pm

In this video, we discuss the importance of frustration tolerance and impulse control in productive communication. Effective communication hinges on the ability to delay gratification, allowing individuals to think and articulate their feelings clearly. I use examples from couples' therapy to illustrate common communication obstructions, such as impulsive accusations and counterattacks stemming from unmet emotional needs. By recognizing and slowing down these patterns, individuals can improve their frustration tolerance and impulse control, fostering genuine connections and meaningful communication.

An Exploration of Why One May Get Scammed: The Triumphant Promise

The Narcissism Decoder May 4, 2024 7:00 am

Overconfidence is a common trait of narcissism and can manifest in various ways. It includes an exaggerated sense of self-importance, fantasies of power and control, and a constant need for attention and admiration. Overconfidence can also lead to intolerable suffering, where individuals feel constantly judged and criticized because they fall short of the 'ideal.' The narcissist tends to project these critical feelings onto others, but they typically originate from within. The constant "need" to pursue perfection can leave individuals in a loveless and cruel world. However, there is hope for change through understanding and experiencing a richer, more loving world.

✅Takeaways
👉Overconfidence is a common trait of narcissism and can manifest in various ways.
👉Intolerable suffering is a result of grandiosity, where individuals feel constantly judged and criticized and therefore "need" perfection.
👉The pursuit of perfection can leave individuals in a loveless and cruel world.
👉Understanding and experiencing a richer, more loving world can help individuals overcome grandiosity.

Overconfidence, Painful Suffering and Loneliness

The Narcissism Decoder April 27, 2024 7:00 am

In this conversation, we discuss the origins and impact of self-criticism in major depressive disorder. I explain that self-reproaches often stem from early experiences of abandonment, criticism, or abuse by caregivers, which become internalized as critical introjects. These introjects, or internal images of parental figures, can lead to a decline in self-esteem and self-regard. I try to emphasize the importance of recognizing and challenging this critical voice through therapy and introspection, leading to a transformation towards self-compassion and resilience.

✅Takeaways
👉"Depression is thought to be a struggle with these internal images, basically images of these parental critical figures."
👉"The severity of this ruthlessness, this inner critical voice is very common amongst almost all the patients that I treat with depression."
👉"With each moment of introspection, this self-critical voice begins to diminish, replaced by a newfound sense of self-compassion."

Adolescent Depression and Manic Defenses

The Narcissism Decoder April 6, 2024 6:00 am

Depression is a prevalent mental health condition, with 15 to 20 percent of people experiencing it at some point in their lives. In order to understand the causes of depression, it is important to consider the subtypes or variations of the disorder. What Causes Depression: Self-Esteem Regulation

The Narcissism Decoder March 31, 2024 2:04 pm

In this video, we explore the relationship between shame stress, the inner critical voice, narcissism and anxiety. I explain how shame stress arises from a discrepancy between one's ideal self and reality, leading to an inner critical voice that can be aggressive. This aggression can manifest as self-preoccupation and narcissism, blocking out the reactions of others. Anxious preoccupation can frustrate and render others helpless and impotent. In terms of addressing your anxiety, creating space and questioning that voice will help you recognize and address potential underlying issues of shame, humiliation, anger and/or embarrassment. Delving into unknown aspects of oneself can lead to lasting relief.

Takeaways
✅Shame stress arises from a discrepancy between one's ideal self and reality.
✅The inner critical voice can be aggressive and repressed.
✅Self-preoccupation and narcissism can block out the reactions of others.
✅Creating space and questioning the inner critical voice can help address underlying issues.
✅Delving into unknown aspects of oneself can lead to lasting relief.
